Gearbox problems

Hello all from the new kids on the block. We have a 1986 33 with the Lehman 90 and BW gearbox and reduction gear. Developed low oil pressure and box over heating last season so it is now with Lancing marine for a strip down and rebuild. They have found little wrong apart from low oil pressure in forward drive due they think to scored bushes. These which will be replaced and hopefully the oil pressure will improve. My query is have any other 33 owners had gearbox issues? Also the oil cooler for the gearbox seems very small, the tubes, both oil and water, in ours were spotless but it does seem small compared to other installions that I have seen. Has anyone upgraded the gearbox oil cooler? TIA

Is there anybody there? Anyway, gearbox is repaired and will be going back in after the festivities. I’m really interested to find out if anyone has found it necessary to upgrade the oil cooler for the BW gearbox?

I cant help directly with your problem as I have a 321, however other owners do visit the site albeit infrequently and I’m sure will respond to your request in time.

Hi Starbust,

My Nauticat 33 (1981) has a 85HP Ford Lehmann/Gustavsson with a BW hydraulic gearbox. I’ve not had problems so far. I would like just to mention that the former owner of my boat manually wrote on the Operations manual of the boat that the quantity of oil in the gearbox had to be more important than indicated in the guide (unfortunately I don’t have this document with me right now). But I suppose that this point has been checked already on your Nauticat.

Thanks, will pay attention to the oil level, am aware that it needs sufficient to fill the cooler too. I am still undecided but am leaning towards fitting a larger oil cooler.
